Snack time: A vital meal

For growing children, the afternoon snack is an essential part of their daily meals and should provide 10 to 15% of their daily nutritional intake. While adults can enjoy a snack too (in moderation), it’s especially crucial for children aged 3 to 8 and remains important throughout their growth period.

However, to ensure your kids get the most out of their snack, there are a few rules to follow.

A few guidelines for a healthy and effective snack

First, the snack shouldn’t be too heavy (less than breakfast) and should not replace lunch or dinner.

Next, it should consist of three types of ingredients: a dairy product, a cereal product, and a fruit.

Finally, the only recommended beverage is plain water.

Highly sugary products should be avoided as much as possible.

These fast sugars have an immediate effect but don’t last, unlike the slow-release sugars found in cereals that provide the necessary energy for the rest of the day.

Pro tip: If you buy store-bought products and the first ingredient listed is sugar, skip it! Ingredients are listed in order of quantity.
