For the mashed potatoes
- Potatoes : 1 kilogram
- Milk : 100 milliliters
- Unsalted butter : 50 grams
- Salt : 1 pinch
- Pepper : 1 pinch
- Nutmeg (Powder) : 1 pinch
For the filling
- Beef (Ground) : 500 grams
- Onion : 1
- Garlic Cloves : 2
- Carrots : 2
- Celery stalk : 1
- Tomato paste : 1 tablespoon
- Flour : 1 tablespoon
- Beef broth : 150 milliliters
- Paprika powder : 1 teaspoon
- Thyme (Dry) : 1/2 teaspoon
- Salt : 1 pinch
- Pepper : 1 pinch
- Olive oil : 2 tablespoons
For the topping
- Emmental Cheese (Râpé) : 100 grams
Preparation steps
Prepare the mashed potatoes

Peel and cut the potatoes into chunks.
Cook them in a large pot of boiling salted water for about 20 minutes, until tender. -
Drain, then mash the potatoes using a potato masher.
Incorporate the warm milk and butter, mixing until smooth.
Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
Set aside.
Prepare the filling

Dice the vegetables into small pieces.

Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion, garlic, carrot, and celery for 5 minutes, until tender.

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula.
Stir in the tomato paste and sprinkle with flour. Mix well to coat.
Pour in the broth, add the paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. -
Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
Assemble the shepherd’s pie

Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).
Spread the beef filling evenly in a baking dish. -
Cover with the mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface with a spatula or fork to create patterns.
